Chargers’ Robinson Gets 12th Double-Double in Win Over Eagles

Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) led the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team in scoring and rebounding, and the Chargers held off a furious late rally by Illinois Valley for an 88-84 Arrowhead Conference victory Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium. 

KEY MOMENTS

  • Sandburg (13-6, 1-1) had a 22-point first-half lead and 51-34 halftime advantage before the Eagles (8-11, 1-2) rallied to within 55-47 barely five minutes into the second half.
  • The Chargers answered with a 19-3 spurt as they built their lead to as large as 23 points, but IVCC would rally once again.
  • Twelve straight points got the Eagles’ deficit down to 85-81 with :31.1 left. Connor Wilson’s 3-pointer with :02 to go made it 86-84, but Sandburg’s Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) iced the game with a pair of free throws at :01.4.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Robinson powered the Chargers with game highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds, giving him his 12th double-double of the season. The sophomore hit 10 of 15 shots from the floor and went 6 of 8 at the free-throw line.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Gowan scored 19 points and had a team-best four assists.
  • Freshman Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) scored 13.
  • Freshman James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) had 11 points and five rebounds.
  • Freshman Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) finished with 10 points and four boards.

FOR THE EAGLES
Wilson scored 21 points, led by a 6-for-9 night from long distance. Colby Robbins (19 points), Yansyn Taylor (19 points) and Joe LaShonse (13 points) also had double-digit nights for IVCC.

UP NEXT
Sandburg hits the road for a pair of conference games next week, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sauk Valley.
